The Powerwall can store the surplus energy from your solar panel system and it uses Time-Based Control, so it knows when the energy rates are low so it can recharge from the grid, and knows when you can make money by selling the surplus solar energy back to the grid.

If there is a power outage, your Powerwall will use the stored energy from the solar PV system to power your home. Tesla Powerwall also comes with Storm Watch – if there is a severe weather forecast, it will prepare by charging the Powerwall to the maximum, so your home does not go down.
